Compare iPad with Aakash tablet PC

Are you excited about Aakash, the lowest priced tablet and like to compare with the iPad? In this post, I will try to compare the features of Aakash UbiSlate with the Apple iPad.

This post is the result of my efforts to compare the world's most popular tablet Apple iPad and the world's lowest priced tablet "Aakash UbiSlate". Many of you think it is insulting to iPad to compare it with the cheap tablets like Aakash. But worth taking a look at the features offered by both and make an informed decision before you spend a lot of money for the big boy "iPad".

Price of iPad and Aakash - Aakash is the winner

When you compare the price, Aakash is clearly the winner. An iPad costs about US$499 for the basic edition with Wifi. But the Aakash costs about US$ 60 for the retail edition without any government subsidies. (The edition offered to the students costs only US$35 after government subsidies.)

Screen size in iPad and Aakash Ubi Slate

iPad is clearly the winner on the screen size, resolution and quality. iPad has a 9.7 inch screen with 1024x768 screen resolution. The touch screen offered by iPad is much better than the resistive screen on the UbiSlate. The screen resolution of Aakash tablet PC is only 800x480.

Wireless and connectivity

Both iPad and Aakash UbiSlate offer Wifi but do not offer direct ethernet connections. Higher end models of iPad offer 3G, but none of the versions of Aakash UbiSlate comes with 3G support. iPad offers Bluetooth as well, which is missing in Aakash.

Aakash UbiSlate comes with 2 USB ports which allows you to connect any USB based external devices to your tablet. This is a very big plus point for Aakash and one of the most criticized negative points for Apple iPad. UbiSlate comes with a 3.5mm Audio jack as well which allows you to connect standard audio devices with your tablet, making it easy to listen to music and movies.

Dimensions

iPad is much thinner and light weight even though it has a much better/bigger screen size. Here is the dimensions of iPad 2 Wifi version:

Height: 9.50 inches (241.2 mm)
Width: 7.31 inches (185.7 mm)
Depth: 0.34 inch (8.8 mm)
Weight: 1.33 pounds (601 g)

Dimensions of Aakash UbiSlate
Height: 190.5mm
Width: 118.5mm
Depth: 15.7mm
Weight: 350 g

You can see that the height and width of Aakash tablet PC is considerably smaller due to the smaller screen size, but the thickness is almost double (iPad wins), but the weight of Aakash Tablet computer is almost half of iPad (Aakash wins).

Accessories

Since Aakash UbiSlate comes with standard USB devices, you can buy and connect any accessories like keyboard, mouse etc. iPad does not have any USB ports and so you have to live with software keyboard or use devices specifically designed for iPad.

There are several cases available in the market to protect your iPad. One of the most popular type of cases is, the one that has a physical keyboard built in to the case itself.

DataWind's UbiSlate offers a leather case which include a built-in keyboard to make it easy to type.

Battery life of UbiSlate and iPad

UbiSlate comes with 2100mAh Battery which will last for approximately 2 to 3 hours. When it comes to battery life, iPad is the winner. It has a much more long lasting battery which will last for up to 10 hours.

Camera

iPad 1 has a front camera and iPad 2 has 2 cameras (front and back). Aakash do not have any cameras, which is a disadvantage.

Which is better - Apple iPad or Aakash UbiSlate?
Making a conclusion on what is better is really difficult. It depends completely on the usage. If you are looking for a basic tablet PC for browsing and basic documentation, Aakash is an affordable choice. If you are ready to shell more money and want a more advanced tablet, then iPad is for you.
