How Google+ insulted me showing a toilet picture in my profile page

Here is an interesting incident where I was insulted by Google+ social network. I posted few photos to Picasa and it got shared at my Google+ page, that too it picked the picture of a dirty toilet as the cover picture.

Recently Google engineer Steve Yegge accidentally shared a message to the world, criticizing his employer for it's wrong strategies on the Google+ social networking platform. I am sure he would have had a tough time with his boss, unless he was fired already from Google. I could not stop myself from laughing on the ignorance of a Google employee on a Google product. Well, something similar happened to me today!

Being the proud owner of GooglePlusTips.com and an active user of Google+, I thought I knew a lot about Google+. I had lot of respect for the privacy policies of Google+ compared to Facebook.

The game changed today when I opened the Google+ page. Last couple of days I was busy searching for a good apartment for a friend of mine who was returning from USA to India. I took a lot of pictures of the apartment and posted in my Picasa web albums so I could share the URL with him. To make sure I won't be blamed later for poor conditions of the apartments I pick for him, I was keen on making pictures of the problems and issues. One of the pictures was a dirty servant toilet in the apartment. I gave a title too for the picture: 'Servant toilet'. That happened couple of days ago.

I opened the Google+ page today to see what is going on. I was shocked to see the below picture in the home page of my Google+ account:

For a moment, I thought my account was hacked and someone posted bad pictures to my page. After looking in to the details, I figured out this was a picture I shot with my Cannon digital SLR camera couple of days ago at Spring Field Apartments, Bangalore. I still couldn't figure out how it appeared in my Google+ page. After some more research, I learnt I had posted the pictures in my Picasa web albums and Google automatically share everything in Picasa to Google+.

Agreed, I did not read the fine print when I said "I accept whatever you say in the terms and conditions". But my big question to Google is, why did you pick the picture of a toilet??? There were 40 other beautiful pictures in the same Album.

This is what Google says about automatic sharing of your Picasa photos to your Google+ profile:
Google+ is the new home for your photos: Albums will be visible on your Google+ photos homepage and the new Photos and Videos tabs on your Google+ profile. Who can see your albums stays the same - visitors can see your public albums and the albums you've shared with them.

One good thing Google has done here is, your sharing settings are still respected. If you have kept your photos private, they remain private in your Google+ profile as well. But in many cases, people do not bother to make photos private in Picasa assuming no one will bother to check your Picasa album and find those pictures. But that is not the case anymore. If you have any public photos in Picasa, they are automatically shared in your Google+ page publicly and all of your followers will see them!
