Education System in West Bengal State

Education in government aided schools is in a miserable condition and the reasons behind it.

Despite of many trial and error methods adopted by educational ministers of our state, the state government sponsored and government schools of West Bengal are in very miserable condition. Performance of these schools has reached all time low. Today most of the well to do families sends their child to private schools. Even it is found that teachers of state government sponsored and government schools send their child to private schools and most of our political leaders also do the same. There are several reasons behind this situation.

State government has several machineries for better working of schools. School board, DI, SI, AI so many designated posts for schools, still the outcome are not satisfactory.
The management committee along with its academic council and staff council are responsible for all major decisions regarding school. These members are supposed to work together for the improvement of educational standard of students, development of personality, make the students fit for the outer world. Managing committee of school has to control the organizational culture of the school, look after the development of the school building, systematic and smooth working of a school. So the members of managing committee should be chosen with great care. Unfortunately the real picture is something different. Till date most of the managing committee members of a school are not fit for the post in respect of culture, education. In most cases managing committee members are more concerned with development funds of the school rather than actual development of the school. Interference of political parties is also a major reason against the real development.

Quality of teachers is also a matter of concern. Teachers should have practical approach rather than only book knowledge. Teaching profession is something different from other professions. Unfortunately most of the teachers are taking this profession only due to high salary. They don't have the dedication needed in this profession. In many girls' school, lady teachers have small equipped kitchen in the school building. Once in a month they arrange picnic in their school during duty hours! Nobody has to check it.

Again the quota system is a curse for schools. Many inefficient teachers are appointed on quota basis and the school faces troubles to adjust these teachers in class routine.

West Bengal SSC's decision to reduce the qualifying marks is also a negative approach.
